“Manhattan Kids Guide” sat down with Denise Rodriguez to discuss the procedure for parents making the transition for their child from Pre-K to Kindergarten.

M.K.G:
What are the tiers in terms of a parent wanting to get his or her child into Muscota?

D.R.:
The tiers are siblings first, District 6 families and then the outer boroughs.

M.K.G.:
What’s the best way to start?

D.R.:
I suggest going to our website to schedule a tour. We have about twelve tours starting from October through March. When you click on the admissions link you can look at the dates that are available and schedule your tour. I’ll follow up by email with the confirmation for the date that you’ve chosen. Any changes, you can always go back into the website and click on to another date.  This will let me know that you can’t make your first choice date, but that you can make your second choice. Also, you must attend the tour in order to get an application.

M.K.G.:
Is there anything a parent should bring with him or her to the tour?

D.R.:
Yes, two proofs of address. It is critical that parents bring the right documents because there are regulations. Bring recent bills with one parent’s name or both. Pay stubs are also taken or a mortgage or a lease. Also taken are documents from the State of New York if you are on Public Assistance. Any of those documents are valid ones to bring. Those not accepted include cellphone bills, cable bills or a driver’s license.

The Transition from Pre-K to Kindergarten for Your Child in District 6 Manhattan
and the Boroughs

M.K.G.:
Why is it important to take a tour?

D.R.:
The tour is important so that the parent discovers the right choice for their child.

Children all learn in different ways. I feel that parents should always visit the school. Even though it is only two hours, you get a sense of what is going on and whether or not it is a good fit for your child.

M.K.G.:
How is a child selected to gain admission to Muscota?

D.R.:
We get all the applications and we put them into a computer system that was created by the Department of Education.  It’s a random lottery. We put all the names, addresses and data into the system and hit “submit”.

M.K.G.:
What comes next?

D.R.:
We send out letters We hold twenty five student in two classes. We send out those letters to fifty in all which includes the siblings. So for example if we had ten siblings, then we will only have forty spots which we take from the applications. Once the letters go out we give families about two weeks to let us know whether or not they want the seat. If they do, then we have them register and the seat is theirs. Throughout the summer this changes - because parent visit a lot of schools. This activates the wait list. We had long wait list last year and we used every single one. I called every parent, even out of borough, until September. It’s a parent’s decision whether to accept the space or not.
